Independent Power Production

Independent power production enables ICL to optimize its energy consumption. By using cogeneration power plants in some facilities, ICL’s plants use residual heat from electricity generation as a thermal energy source, resulting in a highly efficient process in terms of fuel use. \

ICL operates several cogeneration plants at different sites:

  • ICL Dead Sea – In August 2018, ICL’s new natural gas based CHP (combined heat and power) plant at Sdom became fully operational. The plant operates with significantly enhanced efficiency compared with the previous installation. The new plant has a production capacity of approximately 230 MW of power, supplying most of the electricity demand for all ICL’s Israeli sites, replacing most of the electricity previously purchased from external sources by ICL Israel. Some surplus electricity from the new plant is also sold by ICL to the Israeli national grid. The plant also supplies various facilities at ICL Sdom with approximately 330 tonnes of steam per hour. Due to its full natural gas operation, embedded high efficiency and highly advanced pollution reduction technologies, the new plant also allows for a significant reduction in direct air emissions such as NOx (Nitrous Oxide).  It is also expected to reduce total ICL greenhouse gas emissions (replacing indirect external Scope 2 emissions with lower levels of direct Scope 1 emissions).
  • ICL Rotem – The sulphuric acid plants and the PMA plant (which uses oil shale as a primary fuel) together provide electrical production capacity of 40MW and 340 tonnes of steam per hour. These cogeneration plants operate at a high efficiency level and utilize heat generated from the sulphur combustion and conversion process. By 2022 there is a plan to replace the old oil shale facility with natural gas infrastructure that will deliver GHG and efficiency benefits.
  • ICL YPH JV – High temperature heat recovery systems at the sulphuric acid plants provide both steam and electricity for process needs.
  • ICL UK CPL –The cogeneration plant operated by the site has been in operation for many years, as the first phase of re-engineering of the entire plant was completed in 2016. A re-evaluation of the cogeneration, undertaken in 2020, concluded that the installation should only be utilized for demand response.
  • ICL Germany Ladenburg- Since 2014 the site has benefited from a CHP plant with a production output of 2 MW of electricity, 1 MW of steam and 1 MW of hot water.
