Air Quality

ICL strives to continuously improve its environmental footprint. Reducing air emissions is a central goal of ICL’s environmental strategy. ICL regularly monitors emissions of pollutants to better manage its operations. ICL is taking steps to reduce air emissions by implementing emission prevention solutions and switching to cleaner fuels. \

Air pollutants include substances, gasses, and particles in the air, whether from natural sources or as the result of human activity. Human endeavors, such as energy generation, transportation, industrial and agricultural activities, are responsible for generating the majority of air pollutants. Common pollutants from industrial activities include nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOC) and others.

Maintaining air quality at our production sites, while reducing air emissions, is a central goal of ICL’s environmental strategy. Typical materials emitted are mainly inorganic compounds and particles and a minority of VOC. The Company regularly measures its emission of pollutants, to monitor and locate uncontrolled emissions in accordance with local law, regulations, and conditions of each site’s permits & licenses, through usage of accepted technologies. Moreover, ICL takes steps to reduce air emissions of various pollutants in different ways, such as implementing emission prevention solutions and switching to cleaner fuels.

In recent years, ICL’s sites have implemented multiple projects to reduce air emissions. These have resulted in the reduction of multiple pollutants.

Reduction activities that occurred in 2021-2022

  • Implemented new NOx and N2O treatment technology at the nitrous acid facility stack at Haifa F&C.
  • ICL Rotem: Phased out of oil shale by switching to natural gas at ICL Rotem PMA. For more on ICL Rotem’s air emission reduction activities see Building New Infrastructure

Future reduction activities:

  • ICL Dead Sea and Dead Sea Magnesium will implement major dust reduction projects over the next few years. Our other production sites in Israel will also increase their efforts to reduce particle emissions.

ICL expects its air emissions to continue to decrease in the next few years, as the Company continues to implement the Clean Air Law at its Israeli sites, including the reduction steps described above, and other steps that are yet to be determined.

Israel's Clean Air Law

Israel’s Clean Air Law was enacted to improve air quality and reduce air pollution. ICL has invested significant amounts of capital and other resources to comply with emission permits granted under the law and will continue to do so over the next few years. As a result, some of ICL’s main air emissions have already decreased considerably, and further reductions are expected in the upcoming years.

Metrics

In the charts below, 2018 appears as the base year used by ICL to measure its long-term performance (in addition to short term, year over year performance). Air emissions data is based on direct measurements of emissions from point sources.

2022 is the first year in which we included the data from several production sites in Brazil that ICL acquired in 2021. But even as we added multiple sites in Brazil, we continued our efforts in reducing air emissions and succeeded in most of the main indicators.

Sulfur Oxides SOx

20182019202020212022
SOx3.892.922.532.52.49

In 2022, ICL’s global SOx emissions were reduced by 0.4% versus 2021, and by 36% versus 2018. These long-term significant reductions are mostly attributed to the installation of advanced and improved catalysts at both Rotem sulfuric acid production sites. This has also resulted in a significant decrease in relative terms of SOx per total phosphate production.

Nitric Oxide NOx

20182019202020212022
NOx1.51.431.381.261.17

NOx emissions continued to decrease by 7% in 2022 versus 2021, and by 22% versus 2018.

Suspended Particulate Matter PM

20182019202020212022
PM0.940.580.530.470.38

PM emissions continued to decrease by 19% in 2022 versus 2021, and by 59.6% versus 2018. In the next few years, more projects to decrease PM emissions will come to fruition. We therefore expect a further reduction of PM emissions in the foreseeable future and to keep our overall downward trend.

Volatile Organic Compounds VOC

20182019202020212022
VOC0.070.0740.0880.0860.093

The overall trend of increased emissions of VOC is due to the new Sodom power plant that has been operating since 2018. The emissions should stabilize as the power plant is at standard operation. In the long run we hope to see a decrease in emissions due to the possibility of using PV and green hydrogen as the main fuel source in our Sodom site. Some of the increase of VOC emissions in 2022, is due to an increase in emissions at one of our sites in the Netherlands. VOC emissions increased by 8% in 2022 versus 2021.

Ammonia NH3

20182019202020212022
NH30.090.0320.0080.0110.0075

ICL’s global ammonia emissions were reduced by 91.7% in 2022 versus 2018, mostly due to significant reduction efforts at YPH in China and ICL Haifa F&C. ICL’s ammonia emissions are generally very low compared to most other ICL air emissions described in this report. Ammonia emissions decreased by 32% in 2022, versus 2021.
