EHS Performance

Health and safety are a top priority for ICL. ICL will ensure the safety, security and health of our employees, contractors, visitors, and the environment. We strive to achieve a Zero Incident Culture with top-tier safety performance. To this end, ICL invests extensively in safety training and embraces a strong safety culture. We measure our EHS performance. Each year leading and lagging EHS indicators are determined and tracked according to each business unit, providing targets for improvement for our executives, site managers and EHS managers. \

ICL complies with strict occupational safety and health standards and has implemented a new safety and environmental management system that provides the framework and structure to drive excellence. ICL’s EHS&S Policy and procedures create a common language across the Company.

Each year leading and lagging EHS targets are determined. The performance results are tracked according to each production site and are set as personal goals for executives, site managers and EHS managers.

We strive to achieve a “zero incident” safety culture. In order to achieve this goal, ICL has taken many steps. These include technological advancements, adopting a learning organization culture and setting specific safety targets for each of its sites. These targets include a 5% reduction in 2023 (vs 2022) in Right to Operate measurement (RTO), and a 2% reduction of the Incident Rate (IR). We also continue to monitor the Severity Index (SI) performance. In addition, ESG KPIs and targets, including  EHS      targets, have been embedded in executive measures for success and financial performance-based benefits. For more information about ICL’s ESG targets see Vision and Commitments, about ICL short term compensation policy see ICL’s 2022 Annual Report pp.210 & 215.

For more information about our Health and Safety culture see EHS Approach.

EHS Lagging Indicators

During 2022, ICL employees completed a total of approximately 22.4 million working hours. The total number of accidents decreased by 19% in 2022 when compared to 2021. In 2022, the IR was 0.62, continuing a downward trend as illustrated below.

RTO (Right To Operate index) is an indicator that ICL developed in order to measure environmental non-compliance. The RTO performance has been improving steadily over the past few years.

Calculations of IR (Injury Rate) and SI (Severity Index) rates are conducted based on a 200,000 factor, multiplied by total lost employee workdays and absent days. The SI methodology assumes that the number of absent days correlates with the severity of the safety event.

*The IR figures for 2020 and 2021 have been updated compared to the 2021 ESG report due to an implementation of a new IT system that consolidated all safety related data, resulting in a more accurate representation. At ICL, the safety and well-being of our employees are of paramount importance to us. We strive for a culture of zero incidents, where every individual feels secure and protected in their work environment. We prioritize implementing stringent measures to ensure their safety and consistently endeavor to enhance our safety protocols. Regrettably, in February 2022, we experienced a fatality of one of our employees in an accident at our YPH Joint Venture site in China. Following a thorough investigation, the authorities concluded that the incident did not warrant charges against our company, and no sanctions were imposed. This was the first fatality involving an employee we experienced in the past five years. Despite our ongoing efforts, we were deeply saddened to face another fatal incident at our Green-Leaf award winning ICL Iberia site in Spain in March 2023. We are fully cooperating and maintaining transparent communication with both the local authorities and our internal investigation team. This collaborative approach ensures a comprehensive examination of the incident and allows us to identify any potential areas for improvement within our safety management systems. We remain committed to learning from these unfortunate incidents and taking all necessary measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. The safety and well-being of our employees will always remain our top priority.

** Transport incidents are those that occurred during the transport of materials to or from ICL sites, as defined by  SASB RT-CH-540a.2

EHS Leading Indicators

ICL focuses on proactive leading indicators in order to create a strong safety culture, and to prevent EHS related events from occurring. Several crisis and emergency drills are performed annually in each site to ensure personnel preparedness. EHS external audits and other assessments are performed in accordance with the EU Seveso Directive, OSHA PSM regulation, UK HSE control of major accidents and other leading frameworks, in all ICL operations, including on contractors.

External Standards

ICL endorses and follows a variety of initiatives and quality management systems in order to improve and streamline processes and performance, as well as to reduce risks. The company has adopted occupational health and safety management systems beyond regulatory requirements at 81% of its production sites. Full adoption is planned      by the end of 2024. These EHS management systems are either ISO 45001/ISO14001 certified or equivalent management systems. The certified sites include approximately 98% of ICL’s production sites’ workforce, and cover about 85% of its total global workforce (based on data used in GRI disclosure 102-8). Locations that do not have industrial production processes, such as office buildings, do not have safety management systems beyond what is required by law. This affects approximately 14% of ICL’s employees. ICL has set goals to obtain the aforesaid ISO certifications for 100% of its production sites in the coming years.

Most of ICL’s production facilities are certified with ISO standards or with equivalent standards for environmental management, safety and quality. All major energy consuming sites are certified with the energy ISO standard. Food and pharma production sites are certified with GMP/Q7 or other designated standards for the food and pharma industries.

The decline in the percentage of certified ICL’s sites is due to the acquisition of multiple sites in Brazil, which are in the process of obtaining ISO certifications.
