Management Approach

As part of its commitment to top tier ESG performance, ICL has set guidelines that establish high standards for ESG management. ICL ensures that the required procedures, controls, training programs, and resources are in place to achieve excellence in all ESG dimensions. ESG KPIs are an integral part of the performance evaluation of managers at all levels and are linked to executives’ financial incentives. \

ICL manufactures products on four continents and markets them to thousands of customers in more than 100 countries, meeting the evolving needs of millions of people around the globe. To accomplish this, the Company uses various natural resources such as raw materials, energy, and water. ICL strives to minimize the environmental impact of its operations. The Company has a systematic approach to managing environmental issues that include raising awareness, allocating significant resources to mitigate risks, acting responsibly, and implementing best practices. There is a continuous effort to reduce environmental impact and aim for excellence and innovation. Employees go through training on various ESG subjects throughout the year, with a concentrated effort to raise awareness during our annual ESG week. ESG KPIs are an integral part of the performance evaluation of managers at all levels and are linked to executives’ financial incentives.

ICL follows global CDP, SASB, TCFD and GRI frameworks in its reporting. ICL has included TCFD disclosures in its 2022 Annual Report, for the second time. ICL incorporates SDGs in defining its material priorities.

As part of ICL’s strategy, a gap analysis for the Company’s ESG performance and stakeholders’ materiality analysis is conducted on an annual basis and reviewed by its executives. Based on this analysis, the Company creates an action plan for its business units.

As a leading specialty minerals company, ICL is aware of the potential impact of its operations and products. Environmental, safety, health and security performance are at the core of ICL’s efforts. Therefore, the Company is investing in environmental protection, pollution prevention and increasing the efficiency of its production facilities. As part of its sustainability vision for 2030, ICL has established both short and long-term goals for its sustainable performance, including a commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2050. ICL has furthered commitment to SBTi towards setting a more ambitious decarbonization plan and targets in accordance with SBTi.

Significant efforts and resources are invested to comply with regulations and corporate goals, exercising a proactive approach.

ICL is committed to eliminating EHS&S incidents and complying with all regulatory requirements by taking a proactive approach that empowers employees to identify at risk conditions and behaviors, and learn from them to minimize risk

Some of ICL’s products are potentially harmful to the environment and to the health and safety of the public as a result of the effluents, air emissions and waste that are generated during their production, as well as at other stages of the products’ life cycle.

As part of its ICL EHS&S policy, the Company engages in initiatives aimed at reducing its environmental impact. The efforts are taken in multiple dimensions, such as the responsible use of natural resources, increasing circularity and energy efficiency, reducing air pollution and waste, and responsibility over the end of life of ICL products. The company also acts to promote an ongoing, honest, and transparent dialogue with its stakeholders.

Environmental, safety, health and security performance are at the core of ICL’s values

ICL’s environmental guidelines take a proactive approach, which are characterized by the voluntary adoption of advanced international environmental management principles and programs, e.g., participation in the Responsible Care program administered by the International Council for Chemicals Association (ICCA) and is founded on principles of Product Stewardship. ICL incorporates the precautionary principle in its operations and in its development and sales of the company’s products.

All major energy consuming sites have been accredited by ISO 50001 or the internal standard. In total, 15 out of 17 of ICL’s largest sites, which are accountable for approximately 90% of ICL’s total global energy consumption, have been ISO accredited.

ICL’s direct impact is from its operations. The reported performance data includes all production sites with operational control, including the sites in Brazil that were acquired in 2021. Information regarding biodiversity and mining is relevant to five of ICL’s mining sites. This management approach is relevant to all material environmental topics. In areas where there is more relevant information that is specific to a given material topic, additional details can be found in that topic section within this report.

Implementing an Enterprise Smart Management system (ESM)

As part of ICL’s strategy for a sustainable future and high level ESG performance, ICL has created an ESM project with several ambitious goals:

  1. Unify and efficiently control ICL’s operational processes.
  2. Create transparency and implement Learning Organization processes.
  3. Establish an organizational environment that is in control and proactive.

To achieve these goals, ICL has implemented globally leading data management solutions. ESM includes Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), which allows ICL to track and analyze EHSQ&S events, manage sustainability performance, remain in compliance, perform audits and more. The solutions have been implemented in all ICL’s production sites and in several of ICL’s major logistics companies and offices worldwide, which include thousands of active users.

"Year of Sustainability"

ICL declared 2022 the "Year of Sustainability", a global project aimed at increasing employee awareness and engagement regarding sustainability. With the active participation of over 6,000 employees, this program has driven a shift in our corporate culture and operations, ensuring we stay on course despite the challenges that lie ahead.

During the "Year of Sustainability," ICL employees were actively engaged in a wide range of activities aimed at deepening their understanding and commitment to sustainable practices. They participated in diverse initiatives such as challenges, online sessions, lectures by external guest speakers, and engaging round table discussions. These activities covered a multitude of sustainability-related topics, including GHG emissions reduction, energy efficiency, food waste prevention, circular economy, diversity, biodiversity and more. By actively involving employees in these activities, ICL fostered a culture of awareness and action towards creating a more sustainable future.

This comprehensive program encompassed a global plan that spanned geographies, units, sites, and cultures, while allowing for local adjustments. It reached every corner of ICL, engaging employees and their families, and emphasizing a holistic approach to sustainability. This approach extended beyond the organization itself, encompassing sustainability efforts in the community and at home.

Aligned with the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a clear methodology was developed to guide our sustainability endeavors. A detailed monthly plan, complete with measurement and control processes, ensured progress and accountability. Dedicated communication campaigns, such as the weekly Flash News, delivered relevant knowledge content to all employees and their families, fostering a continuous learning environment.

The "Year of Sustainability" also garnered strong engagement and commitment from senior management through a Global Steering Committee. A monthly sponsorship model, tailored to the program's content, was implemented, and “Rangers” were appointed to represent each business unit, further amplifying involvement. Business initiatives, including flagship projects and dedicated campaigns by the Business Innovation for Growth (BIG) program, were promoted, emphasizing the integration of sustainability into commercial and innovation processes.

Throughout this initiative, 520 sustainability ideas were processed, resulting in the development of 150 sustainability projects.

To support the program's success, a toolbox of diverse, innovative, and creative methods was developed for culture activities. These included face-to-face and digital/virtual games, stories from around the world, mandatory training, and the use of the Company portal and other platforms.

With each employee actively participating in ICL's sustainability journey, we are collectively working towards a sustainable and better world.

Multiple tangible outcomes highlight the significant impact of employee involvement in shaping ICL's sustainability agenda and driving positive change.
