ICL Iberia extracts potash from mines 530 to 900 meters below ground in Spain by mining sylvinite, a mixture of potash and salt found in varying concentrations. It then separates the potash from the salt at production sites located near the mines. ICL Iberia plans to develop a 30-megawatt photovoltaic field on the Cogulló salt deposit and has received planning commission approval to amend the mining master plan admitting solar panels deployment.
ICL Iberia was awarded the International Fertilizer Association’s (IFA) Green Leaf Award for the company’s safety, health, and environmental excellence. An in-depth review of 25 applications by an independent panel of SHE experts concluded that ICL Iberia’s site in Suria, Spain, deserved the 2022 Green Leaf Award in the Phosphate/Potash Producer Category for its excellent environmental case study and the overall world class EHS management of its fertilizer mining site. The production site showcased its successful Sustainable Mining Management System, with an illustration of how ICL Iberia’s new terminal at the Port of Barcelona, which was inaugurated in 2020, as well as its new ramp at Cabanasses, which became operational in 2021, helped to substantially reduce GHG emissions of the site

The new ICL Terminal, operational since June 2020, boasts significant environmental improvements. These include new sites and transport by train to substantially reduce the number of trucks transporting potash and salt from Bages to the Port of Barcelona, thereby reducing air pollution and GHG’s. The terminal also contains new dust collection systems with high-capacity filters at all discharge points. In addition, a portion of the electricity required at the site will be produced on site through solar energy derived from photovoltaic panels that will be installed on the roofs of the buildings at the terminal.
Area 80,500 m2
Concession: 35 years
Annual ship loading capacity: 4 million tonnes
Investment: 77 million euros
ICL Iberia and Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC – The Catalan Railways Authority) have signed a 30-year agreement to increase the number of trains transporting potash and salt from the Bages mines to the Port of Barcelona.
This agreement involves an initial reduction of about 86,000 trucks per year — with the corresponding decrease in CO₂ emissions, and will also contribute to increased road safety.

In 2015, ICL Iberia submitted a multi-year restoration program to Catalonia’s government for its two production sites located in Suria and Sallent. The restoration program for the Suria site is scheduled to extend to 2094, and for the Sallent site until 2070, and will address restoration of salt deposits as well as other environmental issues, such as wastewater drainage and sludge treatment.
In July 2020, ICL announced its decision to halt its production at the Vilafruns mine in Spain.
Mining at Vilafruns was due to continue until 2021. An infrastructure upgrade at the Company’s nearby Suria mine was expected to be completed and allow for the consolidation of mining activities in Suria, as projected in the Company’s Phoenix Plan.
However, market conditions, COVID-19-related restrictions, and high operating costs at Vilafruns brought forward the planned closure. In parallel, ICL stepped up its production at the Suria mine.
