In 2009, scientists identified nine planetary boundaries within which humanity can continue to develop and thrive safely on the planet. This methodology to help humanity advance while caring for the environment was later updated in 2015. The planetary boundaries include: stratospheric ozone depletion; loss of biosphere integrity (biodiversity loss and extinctions); chemical pollution and the release of novel entities; climate change; ocean acidification; freshwater consumption and the global hydrological cycle; land system change; nitrogen and phosphorus flows to the biosphere and oceans; and atmospheric aerosol loading. Unfortunately, humankind is currently exceeding several of these boundaries.
ICL, as a global company, is involved in a range of activities that cover all stages of the product life cycle. From the production of raw materials through their final use in end markets, ICL develops and maintains through its project plans and designs a focus on environmental protection at all stages, i.e. Product Stewardship.
ICL’s activities related to several of the planetary boundaries include:
Global agriculture activities exert pressure on planetary boundaries, posing a challenge to food security and compromising the Earth’s stability.
