Food security is a global concern, with approximately 690 million people suffering from chronic hunger and malnutrition. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 2 aims to eradicate hunger and achieve food security by 2030. However, the challenge of producing enough food to meet the growing global population’s needs remains a significant challenge.
One important factor in increasing global food production is the use of fertilizers. Fertilizers provide essential nutrients to crops, increasing growth and yield.
The importance of fertilizers in addressing food security cannot be overstated. Research has shown that without the use of fertilizers, global food production would need to increase by at least 40% to meet the needs of the projected population growth by 2050.
It is essential to promote the responsible and efficient use of fertilizers, while also exploring alternative methods of sustainable agriculture to ensure food security worldwide.
ICL plays a crucial role in the global food supply chain, as our contribution, when measured, is estimated to provide an equivalent of the daily food consumption for 158 million* people, supplying an equivalent of approximately 173 billion meals per day, or 115 trillion calories. However, the ongoing climate crisis and geopolitical developments, such as the war in Ukraine, pose significant challenges to food production outputs. In response, many farmers are reducing fertilizer consumption, leading to a decrease in global harvest and exacerbating the emerging food crisis.
To address these challenges, ICL is committed to improving nutritional security through a range of solutions, including fertilizers and minerals from around the world, innovative Ag-Tech solutions, alternative proteins and supplements, and an array of products that preserve and extend shelf life while reducing food waste. Importantly, sustainability is a core value for ICL and is integrated throughout the company’s activities. By developing sustainable products and solutions, ICL not only improves food quality and nutritional value but also helps preserve the environment and, in some cases, exceeds emerging regulations.
ICL’s efforts to improve nutritional security and promote sustainability have a significant positive impact on the global food supply chain and the environment. By continuing to prioritize sustainability and investing in innovative solutions, ICL will help meet the challenges of the emerging food crisis and build a more sustainable future for all.

By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding and other disasters and that progressively improve land and soil quality.
Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning.
By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution
By 2030, combat desertification, restore degraded land and soil, including land affected by desertification, drought and floods, and strive to achieve a land degradation-neutral world.
