Innovation @ ICL

Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) are part of ICL’s DNA and are vital to the Company’s continued growth. ICL is expanding its innovation ecosystem and investing in R&D to innovate and expand our product portfolio. ICL views the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as guiding principles, and ensures they are addressed as part of ICL’s RD&I process. Taking a step further, ICL RD&I launched an impact assessment tool to optimize the potential for positive impact. \

ICL is developing new production processes, applications, formulations, and products for its diverse markets, including agriculture, food, energy storage solutions and engineered materials. Over the years, ICL has developed and marketed many innovative products and solutions, accumulating expertise in diverse technologies. ICL’s RD&I practices have evolved in its perspective in the last few years. Evolving from supporting business continuity to adopting a “Sustainability Index” when developing new products. An index that includes GO/NO GO decision making analysis based on defined environmental criteria while developing new products. From there, using the UN SDG’s as conceptual guidelines in our RD&I strategy. And now, expanding the arc even further, ICL’s RD&I unit is embedding impact strategy and criteria. Through the impact assessment tool, we define and optimize the potential for positive impact, setting clear and measurable goals which are monitored and reported.

Expanding ICL's Innovation Ecosystem to Support Our Strategic Growth

ICL’s RD&I activities are part of our global strategic plan and include product, formulation, and process developments. The activities include internal research and collaborative research with universities, institutes, and start-ups. Our RD&I unit aims to create new products and solutions to address current and future market and customer needs and identify new uses for our core minerals and their derivatives. The Company’s core RD&I activities support each of our business segments.

ICL’s RD&I unit has already supported bringing to market the first fertilizer with biodegradable coating. In January 2023, ICL announced the release of our latest sustainable innovation for controlled-release fertilizers: Eqo.s® technology. It’s a fully biodegradable coating technology, designed for the professional turf industry to deliver superior turfgrass performance with improved nutrient release patterns and the highest nutrient use efficiency. This cutting-edge technology offers a new level of environmental efficiency and a substantially faster breakdown of nutrients, while leaving no trace of itself.

Food security is one of ICL’s focus areas. As such, advanced crop nutrition is a key issue. This includes unique and biodegradable coating, nutrient sensing, growth enhancers, utilization of digital technologies and fixation. In other aspects of food security, ICL is focusing on the decrease of food waste and alternative protein solutions.

Another focus area is advanced materials, including energy storage and low energy consumption applications, flame retardants, biocides, urban mining and circular economy.

ICL is constantly looking for innovative solutions in its plants and operations. The Company has launched multiple initiatives to innovate and create excellence in its production processes, moving towards Industry 4.0.

Going forward, ICL aims to continue expanding, and strengthening its businesses, by      growing its specialty businesses through RD&I, partnerships, and acquisitions.

‘BIG’ - Business Innovation for Growth

ICL is harnessing the strengths, knowledge and expertise that exist within its own organization to innovate. It leverages its internal ecosystem through BIG, a platform where its employees from all regions and business units, can participate in the innovation process.

The establishment of BIG has played a significant role in creating a culture of innovation, partnership, and employee involvement at ICL. The program has provided a platform for ICL's over 12,700 employees worldwide to contribute their ideas and leverage their experience, knowledge, and ingenuity. Since its launch in January 2020, the program has received more than 4,800 ideas across various areas of ICL's businesses. Out of these ideas, over 1,500 have become fully funded projects, with more than 1,100 already completed.

The BIG program has made a remarkable contribution to ICL's current and future profitability, as well as other aspects of the company's business, including commercial and service excellence, operational excellence, employee satisfaction, and safety. By encouraging employees at all levels to participate in innovation and providing them with the necessary support and resources, ICL has fostered a culture where innovation is valued and nurtured. The program's structured idea evaluation process, professional support, recognition and allocation of resources have allowed employees to turn their ideas into meaningful business impact, driving growth and success for ICL.

ICL's BIG program has not only demonstrated the power of employee-driven innovation, but has also set an example for other companies. By recognizing the potential within its workforce and implementing a comprehensive measurement system like the BIG index, ICL has created a framework for evaluating and comparing innovation efforts. The program's success lies in its ability to generate excitement among employees and provide a platform for their ideas to be heard and developed. This approach has broken down barriers, fostered collaboration, and promoted healthy competition among business units, leading to tangible outcomes and additional annual operating income of hundreds of millions of dollars.

Carbon Reduction Challenge

In 2022 ICL initiated a Carbon Reduction Challenge for its global employees. Employees were invited to contribute ideas on how to reduce direct and indirect carbon dioxide emissions, how to capture, utilize, and store carbon dioxide, and how to reduce the carbon intensity of ICL's products. 81 ideas were received and forwarded to the relevant business units for further evaluation and testing.
